September 2025 — Growing Pains and an Emmy Win

A WrexPat's monthly look back at Wrexham AFC — September 2025

September was the month reality set in a little. Wrexham went 1-2-1 in the league, and for the first time since promotion was confirmed I heard genuine frustration in fan spaces instead of just excitement. It's also the month the club picked up two Emmys without a ball being kicked, which tells you everything about how split this season already feels between two different stories.

A rough home night, then two big away results

QPR beat Wrexham 3-1 at the Racecourse on the 13th, the club's heaviest home defeat of the season to that point. Phil Parkinson didn't dodge it afterward: "Is it personnel or is it tweaking the shape of the team? We're looking at all that to come up with a formula we believe can give us a stronger base to go and win games of football," he told The Wrexham Insider. Credit to the group, they answered it — a 3-2 win at Norwich a week later, then draws with Derby and Leicester to close the month unbeaten in three.

Reading dispatched in the cup

A 2-0 EFL Cup win over Reading on the 23rd kept Wrexham moving in a competition that, by January, would turn into one of the best stories of the whole season. Worth remembering where that run actually started.

The transfer window closed quietly

Deadline day brought in Dominic Hyam on a two-year deal and Issa Kaboré on loan from Manchester City, while George Evans departed and Tom O'Connor and Jacob Mendy both went out on loan to Peterborough. Nothing flashy, mostly squad management.

Meanwhile, the Emmys had other plans

At the Creative Arts Emmys on September 17th, Welcome to Wrexham picked up awards for Outstanding Sound Mixing and Outstanding Picture Editing. Fearless in Devotion's reaction on X summed up the mood: "Welcome To Wrexham does it again at The Emmys!!!!" It's a strange kind of month where the team is figuring itself out in real time on the pitch while the show telling that same story keeps winning trophies for how well it's told. Both things can be true about this club at once — that's kind of the whole appeal of following it.
